Apple sells five million iPhone 5 handsets in opening weekend

Worldwide sales of the iPhone 5 have topped five million in the first three days since release, a million more than the 4S did in over the same period. According to the manufacturer demand for the device has meant some direct customer pre-orders will not be shipped until October. Apple CEO Tim Cook said: “While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone’s patience.”
